Their emotions & physical well-being are meticulously managed in our home, where dogs live in the house, have six bedrooms of their own, and their own bathroom for bathing and grooming. We have separate environs for males and females. Their home, in our home, rivals a pediatric intensive care unit, with areas devoted to canine breeding, labor/delivery with isolettes and incubators, nursing Mom room, (where hymns are always playing), and weaned puppy room equipped with Precision Puppy Crates with grids. The Weaned Puppy room overlooks the Mommies Yard, so the pups, though separated from Mom for weaning, (this must be done as they develop teeth), can see their moms (when the moms are outside), through a big plate glass window. Our lives are devoted to the dogs and they are never left alone.

We have enough adults to pick and choose the ones we want to breed. We allow many puppies to grow up here, constantly evaluating them for breeding as they mature.  We select out the pups that seem less than perfect at the first notice that the pup is not up to our standard for breeding.  We remove pups with bad bites, potential health problems, or non-conformation to the standard.  Each month we remove more pups, selecting out those that we consider less than perfect from our potential breeding pool. By the time the pups have reached maturity we have a small percentage of our original number of pups. The small percentage of pups that make it into our breeding program are gorgeous and fit to be bred.

A WORD TO THE WISE:
Backyard Breeders, Wholesalers, Pet Stores, Commercial Breeders and SOME Unscrupulous Show Breeders

Backyard breeders save all of their money to purchase a few dogs to breed and then if the dogs develop health problems the backyarders usually breed them anyway, as they have a lot of money invested in the animals and they need to get a return on what few animals they have. Conversely, commercial breeders/and other pet store suppliers breed large numbers of animals without regard for health testing, health standards, conformation to the standard, the emotional well being of the pup living on concrete without humans and being treated like a chicken in a chicken coop, or anything else, basically, except money. And, the importers who bring in animals from other countries' puppy mills are no better than Pet Stores and Wholesalers, selling just for the profit, never loving the animals enough to live with their daily needs, never producing pups by staying up all night in devoted commitment to the animal ... their commitment is to money.

We are not backyard breeders, not commercial breeders, not wholesalers, not suppliers to pet stores and we are not importers. We have 30+ years of experience in animal husbandry and we are doing something a little different from many other breeders. We want to produce some of the world's best Havanese, but we will not do close first degree relative in-breedings to get cookie cutter Havanese, like so many of the top show people do these days.

We have almost exclusively given our lives over to the dogs. We are fanatics and we make no apology for it. It is a single minded devotion that takes precedence over other things in our lives. This is the only way we could produce some of the best Havanese, by devoting our every hour to their well being. This is, of course, very confining, and requires constant monitoring of all aspects of our breeding program. We decided to devote a segment of our lives to breeding some of the best dogs, in the best possible of environments, with the closest scrutiny to their emotional and physical well being ... and we are very pleased with our results.

Breedings Of First Degree Relatives

Most of our breeding dogs are nearly perfect in their look ... but will they produce some pups that are nearly perfect ... and some that are not perfect.

What would you say if I told you ...

Well, next year, (if we wanted to), we could provide many litters of nearly identical pups, that all look like cookie cutter perfected dogs.

What would you say it I told you we could produce lots of perfect pups, from a few perfect adults?

How could we produce so many pups next year that are all nearly perfect?

Simple -- in a word -- LINE-BREEDING or In-Breeding of First Degree Relatives.

First  Degree relatives are Mother X Son, Father X Daughter, Brother X Sister. In-Breeding or Breeding of First Degree Relatives, like parent to offspring or sibling to sibling, would allow the doubling up of recessive traits and the pups would almost all look like their gorgeous parents.

In-breeding of first degree relatives is a commonly done and very accepted practice in all AKC show breeding circles, in all breeds. This produces a QUICK FIX FOR THE BREED ... ALLOWING ALL PUPS TO LOOK LIKE EACH OTHER, and allowing all pups to look like their gorgeous parents.  If the parents of a litter are brother and sister, and both are gorgeous, the pups are almost all assured of being gorgeous. This is what the doubling up of recessive traits does for the look of the pup, Cookie Cutter Havanese.

But what does the doubling up of genetic recessive traits mean to the pup's health? It means that the diseases that parental animals are carrying, the diseases that are heretofore unseen in the pedigree lines, or ones that have never shown up before, will now, possibly, even probably, show up in the pups.

Any geneticist will tell you that this is a foolish practice, (DUH! That is why people do not do it). Line Breeding or breeding of first degree relatives causes a doubling up of recessive genetic traits. Those same recessive traits/illnesses do not show up in illness in animals with genetic diversity, with any great frequency.

We are now seeing an exponential display of recessive illnesses in all pure bred dogs.

As purebreds are not a creation of God but rather a man-made creation in which man has selected the parents and produced the type dogs he wants, man has limited the gene pool, tremendously selecting out the diversity. A purebred status, alone, by definition, means a limitation on the gene pool or genetic diversity, creating an unnaturally large display of recessives. When this selecting out of diversity is taken a step farther with in-breeding of first degree relatives, the genetic diversity is gone, many of the genes are similar and the recessive illnesses appear. Of course, the inbred offspring are beautiful, but likely to be more sickly than their cousins with genetic diversity.

Beloved Havanese dogs have genetic diversity. We are not breeding first degree relatives and God save us from an accidental breeding of such.

Therefore, our pups are not cookie cutter Havanese. Many of them look like their parents, but some do not.

Many SHOW breeders are already at the point of unhealthy COOKIE CUTTER HAVANESE. Havanese is a new breed to the AKC  Show World. Many SHOW breeders are producing 30-50 litters per year, many of which are line-bred, offspring of first degree relatives. We are seeing many more heart murmurs, and liver shunts due to inappropriate and irresponsible breeding.  An accidental breeding of first degree relatives is the only acceptable form of line breeding and it, by definition, would preferably be avoided.

Advocating Diversity
The diversity that so protects our Havanese health also provides interesting variations in every aspect of our Havanese looks:

Color, size, temperament, coat, and every other aspect spanning the spectrum from the top line holding steady during movement, to the proportion of back length to leg length. We control the color by only breeding the colors we prefer,  it does produce some predictable results (no in-breeding involved).  We have  several specific looks that we try to breed, but, still, the pups are not mirror images of each other.

At Beloved, Form follows Function. Beauty is secondary to Health.

God Love You for reading this. When you cast your vote for a Havanese please do not vote for one that has been intentionally in-bred from first degree relatives.

Sincerely,
Deborah Owens
